What is Joomla?

Joomla is an open-source content management system.

Signs a site uses Joomla

  • A generator tag naming Joomla. Joomla adds it by default.
  • /media/system/js/ or /media/jui/ in file addresses. Core scripts load from these folders.
  • com_content in page addresses. Non-friendly Joomla addresses name the component directly.

How to check by hand

View the page source and search for joomla, or try opening /administrator on the domain to see whether the Joomla login appears.

What can hide it

The generator tag can be turned off, so check the file paths as well. A negative result doesn’t prove a site isn’t using Joomla, because the checker reads the page source and response headers, and tools loaded later by JavaScript may be missed.

Check the rest of the stack

Paste the address into the Website Technology Checker to see the platform, framework, analytics and more in one report. To see where the site runs, use Who Is Hosting.

Website Technology CheckerFind out what any site runs on: CMS (WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, Ghost, Webflow, Wix, Shopify), forum software (vBulletin, XenForo, phpBB, Discourse), frameworks (Next.js, Nuxt, React, Vue), server and CDN, analytics and more — with versions when the site shows them.

Is Joomla still used?
Yes, although it runs far fewer sites than WordPress. Many long-running sites still rely on it.
