What does chmod 700 mean?
chmod 700 gives full access for the owner only. The owner can read, write and execute (or enter the directory); nobody else has access. Use 700 for ~/.ssh, private script folders and backup directories.
| Who | Digit | Symbolic | Permissions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Owner (user) | 7 | rwx | read, write, execute |
| Group | 0 | --- | no access |
| Others | 0 | --- | no access |
Each digit is the sum of read (4), write (2) and execute (1). In ls -l the file shows as -rwx------ and a directory as drwx------.
