What does chmod 711 mean?
chmod 711 gives owner full, others execute only. Others can enter the directory (traverse it) but cannot list its contents. Used for home directories on shared hosting so the web server can reach ~/public_html without listing private files.
| Who | Digit | Symbolic | Permissions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Owner (user) | 7 | rwx | read, write, execute |
| Group | 1 | --x | execute |
| Others | 1 | --x | execute |
Each digit is the sum of read (4), write (2) and execute (1). In ls -l the file shows as -rwx--x--x and a directory as drwx--x--x.
