What is Drupal?
Drupal is an open-source content management system popular with universities and government sites.
Signs a site uses Drupal
- An x-generator or generator tag naming Drupal. Drupal commonly adds one of these with its major version.
- /sites/default/files/ in file addresses. This is Drupal’s default folder for uploaded files.
- A drupal-settings-json script. Modern Drupal versions use it to pass settings to the page.
How to check by hand
View the page source and search for drupal or sites/default/files.
What can hide it
Administrators can remove the generator header and tag, but the file paths are harder to change. A negative result doesn’t prove a site isn’t using Drupal, because the checker reads the page source and response headers, and tools loaded later by JavaScript may be missed.
