What is epoch time?

Epoch time (Unix time) counts the seconds since 1 January 1970, 00:00:00 UTC — the “Unix epoch”. It ignores time zones and leap seconds, which makes it ideal for storing and comparing moments in logs, databases and APIs. 1767225600 is 1 January 2026, 00:00 UTC.

Seconds, milliseconds or more?

The number of digits tells you the unit: 10 digits are seconds (Unix, PHP, Python time.time()), 13 are milliseconds (JavaScript Date.now(), Java), 16 are microseconds and 19 nanoseconds (Go, some databases). The converter detects the unit, or you can pick it.

The year 2038 problem

Systems that store epoch seconds in a signed 32-bit integer overflow on 19 January 2038 at 03:14:07 UTC, jumping back to 1901. Modern systems use 64-bit integers, which last for billions of years.
