Comment utiliser : Time Zone Converter
- Pick the date, time and the time zone that time is in — or leave Live on to see the current time everywhere.
- Add cities or IANA zones (e.g.
Asia/Kolkata) with the search box; remove any with ✕. Your list is remembered in this browser. - Each row shows the converted local time, date, UTC offset and the difference to your base zone. Click Set as base on a row to enter times in that zone.
- In the meeting planner, find a column that is green for everyone and click it to set that time.
How time zone conversion works
A time zone is a region that shares the same clock time, defined as an offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) — for example UTC+1 for Berlin in winter or UTC−5 for New York. To convert, the tool turns your local date and time into a single moment in UTC and then displays that moment in every other zone. It uses your browser’s built-in Intl API with the full IANA time zone database (the same data that powers macOS, Android and Linux), so historical and future daylight-saving rules are applied for the exact date you choose.
Daylight saving time (DST)
Many regions shift their clocks by an hour in summer, and not on the same day: the EU changes on the last Sundays of March and October, the US on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November, and most of Asia, Africa and South America don’t change at all. Southern-hemisphere countries such as Australia and New Zealand do it the other way round. That’s why the difference between New York and London is usually 5 hours but briefly 4 hours in March and late October — this converter always uses the offset that applies on the selected date.
Why use IANA names instead of abbreviations?
Abbreviations are ambiguous: CST is Central Standard Time in the US (UTC−6), China Standard Time (UTC+8) and Cuba Standard Time (UTC−5). IST can be India, Ireland or Israel. IANA identifiers like America/Chicago or Asia/Kolkata are unambiguous and include the region’s DST history, which is why developers store them in databases and calendar invites. Some zones also have non-hour offsets: India is UTC+5:30, Nepal UTC+5:45 and the Chatham Islands UTC+12:45.
Planning meetings across time zones
- Keep the person with the least flexibility as the base zone and look for green columns in the planner.
- Between Europe and the US West Coast the overlap is small: 9:00 in San Francisco is 17:00 in London and 18:00 in Berlin.
- Avoid scheduling around DST change weeks, or double-check the time on the day itself.
- Write times with the zone (“15:00 CET / 9:00 EST”) or as UTC in documents.
