What is humans.txt?

humans.txt is an informal initiative (humanstxt.org) that started in 2011: while robots.txt speaks to search engine crawlers, humans.txt is a note for people, crediting the designers, developers and writers who made a website. It’s a plain text file at the site root, so it doesn’t affect the design or performance of the site at all.

Why agencies and freelancers use it

  • Credit without a footer link — clients often don’t want “Made by …” in their footer, but a humans.txt is invisible to normal visitors.
  • Documentation — a quick record of the stack, standards and tools used, useful for whoever maintains the site next.
  • Culture — a small, friendly signal that real people built the site.

Format

There is no strict syntax; the convention is sections marked with comments like /* TEAM */, /* THANKS */ and /* SITE */, each containing Key: value lines indented with a tab. This generator follows that convention.

Uploading it

Place the file at https://yourdomain.com/humans.txt. Some hosted platforms don’t allow arbitrary files at the root; in that case host it elsewhere and link to it with <link rel="author" href="…">.
