What is a Markdown task list?

GitHub-flavoured Markdown (GFM) extends regular lists with checkboxes: - [ ] open item and - [x] done item. GitHub, GitLab, Notion, Obsidian and many other tools render them as real checkboxes — and on GitHub issues and pull requests you can tick them directly, with progress shown in issue lists.

Tips for project handoffs

  • Keep nested sub-tasks indented by two spaces — GitHub shows them as a hierarchy.
  • Use “Uncheck everything” to turn a finished project checklist into a reusable template, e.g. a website launch checklist.
  • In GitHub issues, task lists give you a progress indicator (“3 of 7 tasks”) in issue overviews.

Tools that pair well with the Markdown Task List Converter

  • JSON to Markdown Table — Turn API responses or LLM-generated JSON arrays into a clean, aligned Markdown table for READMEs, docs and pull requests.
  • Remove Duplicate Lines — Paste a list to remove duplicate lines instantly.
  • Markdown to Webflow Rich Text — Paste Markdown, check the preview and copy it as formatted rich text — headings, lists, links and bold text land correctly in Webflow’s Rich Text element.
  • Word Counter — Paste or type your text to count words and characters live — plus reading and speaking time, keyword density and length checks for SEO titles, meta descriptions and social posts.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a checkbox in Markdown?
Start a list item with - [ ] for an empty box or - [x] for a ticked one. It works in GitHub, GitLab, Notion and most Markdown editors.
Does nesting work?
Yes. Indent sub-items with two spaces (or a tab) and the tool keeps the hierarchy in every format.
Can I paste a list from Word or Google Docs?
Yes — bullet characters (•, -, *, numbers) are stripped automatically and each line becomes a task.
Does Jira support checkboxes?
Classic Jira wiki markup has no real checkboxes, so the Jira format uses status icons (x) and (/). Newer Jira editors support action items you can paste into.
