What is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem Ipsum is scrambled pseudo-Latin used as placeholder text in design and publishing. It lets designers judge typography, spacing and layout without readers being distracted by meaningful words, and it has been the industry's standard dummy text since typesetters started using it — it became widespread with Letraset transfer sheets in the 1960s and later with desktop publishing software. The text is derived from sections 1.10.32–33 of Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum (“On the Ends of Good and Evil”), written in 45 BC, with words cut and altered so it no longer reads as proper Latin.

Why use placeholder text?

• Realistic layouts. Wireframes and mock-ups look and behave like the real thing — line lengths, wrapping and paragraph rhythm are visible early.
• Focus on design. Stakeholders review the layout instead of editing copy that isn't final.
• Testing. Developers fill templates, CMS fields and components with varying lengths to catch overflow, truncation and empty-state bugs.

Text styles

The English styles are written for DevPack and randomly combined, so they read naturally but say nothing in particular. They are useful when testing with real users, because Latin placeholder text can make people focus on the text instead of the interface.

Tips for using dummy text

• Don't ship it. Search your templates for “lorem” before launch — placeholder text that reaches production is indexed by search engines and looks unprofessional.
• Match real content length. If product descriptions are usually 40 words, test with 40 words, plus a much longer and a much shorter case.
• Use HTML output for CMS fields. The <p> option gives correctly separated paragraphs in rich-text fields and code.
