How to use the ASCII Art Generator
- Type a short word or name — ASCII art works best with 1–12 characters.
- Scroll through the 20 fonts, or choose one under Show.
- Pick Copy as: plain text, a comment for JS/CSS, shell/Python, HTML, a Markdown code block or a ready-to-paste
console.log(). - Click Copy on the font you like, or download it as a .txt file.
Where developers use ASCII art
- Code headers — a banner comment at the top of a stylesheet or the custom-code block of a Webflow site makes sections easy to find.
- README files — a logo in a Markdown code block renders on GitHub, npm and in terminals. Pair it with the README Generator.
- Console easter eggs — a
console.loggreeting in the browser dev tools, popular for hiring messages. - CLI tools — splash screens and help output.
What is FIGlet?
FIGlet (1991) is the classic program for large letters made of ordinary characters. Its fonts (.flf files) describe each letter and how neighbouring letters “smush” together. This tool uses figlet.js with 20 popular fonts, entirely in your browser.
Tips
- Chat apps (WhatsApp, Slack, Discord, Teams) show proportional text and strip leading spaces. Copy with the “WhatsApp / Slack / Discord” option — it wraps the art in
```so it’s shown in monospace — and keep it narrow for phones. - Always display ASCII art in a monospace font — in HTML wrap it in
<pre>, in Markdown in a code block. - Wide fonts like Banner3 or Larry 3D get long quickly; choose “Fitted” or a compact font like Small or Mini for longer words.
- Box-drawing fonts (ANSI Shadow, Calvin S) use Unicode characters — great in terminals and READMEs, but not pure 7-bit ASCII.
- Screen readers read ASCII art character by character. On web pages add
aria-hidden="true"and give the real text separately.
For icons and symbols instead of letters, try Text Symbols and the Emoji Picker.
Tools that pair well with the ASCII Art Generator
- Case Converter — Paste any text and convert it between 11 letter cases — from Title Case for headlines to camelCase and snake_case for code.
- Unicode Character Inspector — Paste anything to see what it’s really made of: each character’s name, code point, UTF-8 bytes and HTML code.
- Lorem Ipsum Generator — Create placeholder text for mock-ups and layouts in seconds — classic Lorem Ipsum or readable English filler, as paragraphs, sentences, words or list items, with or without HTML tags.
Frequently asked questions
How do I put ASCII art in a GitHub README?
Choose “Markdown code block” under Copy as, copy and paste it into README.md. The triple backticks keep the spacing and monospace font.
How do I show ASCII art in the browser console?
Choose “console.log()”, copy and add it to your site’s JavaScript. Visitors who open the developer tools will see the banner.
Why does my ASCII art look broken?
It’s shown in a proportional font, the app removed the leading spaces, or the lines wrapped. Wrap it in a code block (three backticks), keep it narrow and choose a compact font.
How do I send ASCII art in WhatsApp, Slack or Discord?
Choose “WhatsApp / Slack / Discord / Teams” under Copy as. It wraps the art in three backticks so the app shows it in a monospace font and keeps the spaces. On phones, pick a font marked “fits phones” (about 30 columns or less) so lines don’t wrap.
Can I use the fonts commercially?
FIGlet fonts are free to use and distribute; the generated text is yours. Some font authors ask to keep credit in the font file itself, which doesn’t affect your output.
