How numbers are spelled in English
Numbers are read in groups of three digits from the left, each followed by its scale word: thousand, million, billion, trillion and so on (short scale, used in the US and UK today). 1,234,567 is “one million two hundred thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven”. Compound numbers from 21 to 99 take a hyphen: twenty-one, ninety-nine.
“And” or no “and”?
American usage leaves “and” out of whole numbers (“one hundred one”) and keeps it for the decimal point in check writing. British usage puts “and” after hundreds (“one hundred and one”). Turn on British “and” for UK style.
Writing amounts on a check
On checks the dollars are written in words and the cents as a fraction: $1,234.56 becomes “One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100 dollars”. Writing the cents as a fraction and starting with a capital makes the amount hard to alter. The check style does this automatically, and also works for euros, pounds and rupees.
Ordinal numbers
Ordinals give a position: first, second, third, twenty-first, one hundredth. Only the last word changes — “one thousand two hundred thirty-fourth”. Use the ordinal style for dates and rankings in formal writing.
