How to use the SVG Pattern Generator
- Pick a pattern — dots, grid, lines, zigzag, waves, plus, checkerboard, circles, triangles, cross-hatch, diamonds or stripes.
- Set the tile size, line thickness and opacity; low opacity makes subtle textures.
- Choose the pattern and background colors, or a transparent background to lay it over your own color or gradient.
- Copy the CSS (the SVG is inlined as a data URI) or download the tile as an SVG file.
Why SVG patterns?
A pattern tile is a tiny SVG — usually under 300 bytes — that the browser repeats with background-repeat. It stays sharp at any zoom level and on retina screens, needs no extra request when inlined as a data URI, and recolors instantly by changing two values.
.hero {
background-color: #0f172a;
background-image: url("data:image/svg+xml,…");
background-size: 24px 24px;
}
Patterns are built so their edges line up perfectly when tiled. To layer a pattern over a gradient, tick Transparent background and list both images: background-image: url(…pattern…), linear-gradient(…). For hero dividers, see the SVG Wave Generator and Section Divider Generator.
