How to use the Countdown Timer

  1. Type the hours, minutes and seconds, or tap a preset.
  2. Press Start (or Space). Pause and continue any time, or add a minute.
  3. When it reaches zero you hear an alarm; turn on Notification to be alerted in another tab.
  4. Use Copy link to share a timer that opens with the same time.

A timer for cooking, workouts, exams and meetings

Pick a preset or enter any length up to 99 hours. The countdown runs against the clock, so it stays exact in a background tab and keeps going if you reload the page. When time is up the alarm beeps until you stop it, the page title flashes, and — if you allow notifications — your computer shows an alert even when the browser is minimized.

Links that start a timer

Add the time to the address to share or bookmark a timer: /countdown-timer?m=10 for ten minutes, ?s=90 for 90 seconds or ?h=1&m=30 for an hour and a half.

Frequently asked questions

Will the timer ring if the tab is in the background?
Yes. Leave the tab open (it can be in the background) and the alarm plays when time is up. Turn on Notification to also get a system alert.
Why don’t I hear the alarm?
Check that Alarm sound is on, your device isn’t muted, and that you clicked on the page at least once — browsers only allow sound after you interact with a page.
Can I set a timer from a link?
Yes: add ?m=10 (minutes), ?s=90 (seconds) or ?h=1 to the address. Copy link to this timer creates one for you.
Can I install Countdown Timer as a web app and use it offline?
Yes. Countdown Timer is an installable web app (PWA) — installed from your browser, not downloaded from an app store. Click Install app at the top of this page in Chrome or Edge (Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS) or on Android, use Share → Add to Home Screen on iPhone and iPad, or File → Add to Dock in Safari 17+ on a Mac. It then opens in its own window with its own icon, and because it runs entirely in your browser it keeps working offline. Firefox on desktop can’t install web apps. How installing works.
