How to use the Typing Speed Test
- Pick a test length — 30 seconds, 1 minute or 2 minutes.
- Click the box and start typing the highlighted word; the timer starts on your first key.
- Press Space after each word. Mistyped words turn red.
- When time is up, read your WPM and accuracy, then press Restart to try again.
How WPM is calculated
Typing speed is measured in words per minute, where a “word” is standardized as five characters (including spaces). This test counts the characters of the words you typed correctly, divides by five and by the minutes elapsed. Accuracy is the share of characters you typed correctly.
What’s a good typing speed?
Around 40 WPM is average for adults; 60–70 WPM is fast enough for most jobs; professional typists often exceed 80–100 WPM. Accuracy matters more than raw speed at first — aim for 95% or better, and the speed follows.
Tips to type faster
- Keep your fingers on the home row (ASDF JKL;) and use all ten.
- Look at the screen, not the keyboard.
- Practice a few minutes every day rather than once a week.
