Language Dropdown — HTML Select List of Languages

Build a language <select> with ISO 639-1 codes as values and labels in English, in any other language, or in each language’s own name (Deutsch, Español, 日本語) — the best choice for a site language switcher.

How to use the Language Dropdown

  1. The page starts with Languages. Choose the label: the name in the page language, or the native name.
  2. Pin the languages you support with Show first, for example en, es, de, fr.
  3. Keep the ISO code as the value — it matches the lang attribute and Accept-Language.
  4. Copy the HTML, React, Vue or JSON.

Native names for language switchers

When users pick the language they want to read, show each language in its own name — a German speaker looks for “Deutsch”, not “German”. Choose the Native name label. The codes are ISO 639-1 two-letter codes (en, de, zh) that you can use directly in <html lang>, URLs and hreflang tags.

Frequently asked questions

Should a language switcher show native names?
Yes — people recognize their own language’s name. Choose the Native name label, or “Name (native)” to show both.
Can I get the list in another language?
Yes. Country, language, currency, month and weekday names come from your browser’s built-in translations — pick the label language and the whole list is translated and sorted for it.
