What is Next.js?

Next.js is a React framework for building websites and web apps.

Signs a site uses Next.js

  • /_next/static/ in script addresses. Next.js serves its compiled files from this path.
  • An x-powered-by: Next.js header. It’s sent by default unless the site turns it off.
  • A __NEXT_DATA__ script or streaming page data. Pages use these to pass data from the server to the browser.

How to check by hand

View the page source and search for _next. It’s usually in almost every script tag.

What can hide it

Sites can remove the header, but the <code>_next</code> path is the default for nearly all deployments. A negative result doesn’t prove a site isn’t using Next.js, because the checker reads the page source and response headers, and tools loaded later by JavaScript may be missed.

Check the rest of the stack

Paste the address into the Website Technology Checker to see the platform, framework, analytics and more in one report. To see where the site runs, use Who Is Hosting.

Website Technology CheckerFind out what any site runs on: CMS (WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, Ghost, Webflow, Wix, Shopify), forum software (vBulletin, XenForo, phpBB, Discourse), frameworks (Next.js, Nuxt, React, Vue), server and CDN, analytics and more — with versions when the site shows them.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if a website uses Next.js?
Enter the address in the checker above, or view the page source and look for: /_next/static/ in script addresses.
Is the Next.js check always accurate?
A match is a strong sign, but no outside check is certain. Sites can remove the header, but the _next path is the default for nearly all deployments.
Does Next.js mean the site runs on Vercel?
Not always. Vercel makes Next.js, but it can run on other hosts. Use a hosting check to find out.
