Speaker Test — Left, Right & Stereo Check

Check that your speakers or headphones work and are wired the right way round: play a tone or voice in the left, right or both channels, then test bass and phase.

Start quietly, then raise the volume. Wearing headphones? Left should play in your left ear.

How to use the Speaker Test

  1. Set your system volume low, then click Left, Right or Both.
  2. Check that each sound comes from the matching side.
  3. Use the sweep to hear the sound move, the bass test for the low end, and the phase test to check speaker wiring.

What each test checks

  • Left / Right — channels are swapped if “left” plays on the right. On headphones, check you’re wearing them the right way round; on speakers, swap the cables.
  • Sweep — the sound should move smoothly from one side to the other. A gap in the middle points to a balance setting.
  • Bass — a slow sweep from 40 to 120 Hz. Small laptop speakers usually start around 100–150 Hz; headphones and subwoofers go lower.
  • Phase — plays the same tone in phase, then out of phase. Out of phase should sound thinner and harder to place; if the two sound the other way round, one speaker’s + and − wires are swapped.

No sound at all?

Check the output device in your system sound settings, unmute the browser tab, and make sure Bluetooth headphones are connected. Testing a microphone too? Use the Mic Test.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my left and right speakers are swapped?
Click Left: if the sound comes from the right speaker or ear, the channels are swapped — reverse the cables or the headphones.
Why can’t I hear the bass test?
Small speakers can’t reproduce very low frequencies. Laptop speakers usually begin around 100–150 Hz.
Is anything uploaded or recorded?
No. Everything runs in your browser; results and settings are kept on this device only.
Can I install Speaker Test as a web app and use it offline?
Yes. Speaker Test is an installable web app (PWA) — installed from your browser, not downloaded from an app store. Click Install app at the top of this page in Chrome or Edge (Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS) or on Android, use Share → Add to Home Screen on iPhone and iPad, or File → Add to Dock in Safari 17+ on a Mac. It then opens in its own window with its own icon, and because it runs entirely in your browser it keeps working offline. Firefox on desktop can’t install web apps. How installing works.
