Speech recognition is provided by your browser: in Chrome and Edge the audio is sent to Google’s or Microsoft’s speech service to turn it into text. The transcript itself stays in your browser and is saved only on this device.

Tips for accurate dictation

  • Use a headset or sit close to the microphone, in a quiet room.
  • Speak in full sentences at a steady pace; pausing briefly helps the recognizer finish a phrase.
  • Pick the right language and accent — English (India) or English (UK) can be more accurate than US English for those accents.
  • Check your microphone first with the Mic Test.

Want the reverse? Paste text into Text to Speech to hear it read aloud.

Frequently asked questions

Is voice to text free?
Yes. There’s no account, time limit or word limit — keep dictating as long as you like.
Which browsers support it?
Chrome, Edge and Safari on desktop and Android. Firefox doesn’t support the speech recognition API yet.
Is my voice recorded?
Nothing is stored by devpack. Your browser sends the audio to its speech service (Google in Chrome, Microsoft in Edge, Apple in Safari) to recognize it; the text stays on your device.
Why does it stop listening?
Browsers end a session after a pause. This tool restarts listening automatically until you click Stop.
Can I install Voice to Text as a web app and use it offline?
Yes. Voice to Text is an installable web app (PWA) — installed from your browser, not downloaded from an app store. Click Install app at the top of this page in Chrome or Edge (Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS) or on Android, use Share → Add to Home Screen on iPhone and iPad, or File → Add to Dock in Safari 17+ on a Mac. It then opens in its own window with its own icon, and because it runs entirely in your browser it keeps working offline. Firefox on desktop can’t install web apps. How installing works.
