Compare PDF Files — Find Differences Between Two PDFs

Find what changed between two versions of a PDF — a contract, a report, a spec. Added text is green, removed text is red, and the summary counts every change.

How to use the Compare PDF

  1. Drop the original PDF on the left and the changed one on the right.
  2. Choose word by word (best for contracts) or line by line.
  3. Read the highlighted differences: added and removed.
  4. Tick Show only changes to skip the unchanged text.

Spot every edit in a new version

Comparing documents by eye misses small but important changes — a “not” added to a clause, a different date, a number moved. This tool extracts the text of both PDFs and runs a word-level diff, the same method code review tools use, so every insertion and deletion is highlighted. It compares the text; layout, images and formatting changes aren’t shown.

Private by design

Most online PDF services upload your document to their servers. This tool processes the file entirely in your browser with open-source libraries (pdf-lib and PDF.js), so contracts, invoices, bank statements and IDs never leave your device. It works offline once the page has loaded, and there are no file-count limits, watermarks or sign-ups.

Comparing plain text or code instead? Use the Diff Checker. Need the text itself? PDF to Text extracts it.

Tools that pair well with the Compare PDF

  • Text Compare — Paste two versions of a text to see exactly what changed: added and removed lines and the changed words inside them, highlighted side by side or in one view.
  • Merge PDF — Combine several PDF files into one document.
  • ID Card Scanner — Photograph or upload the front and back of an ID card, driver’s license, residence permit or bank card, drag the corners to straighten each side, and get both on one A4 or Letter page at real size — ready to print or save as a PDF.
  • Passport Scanner — Photograph the photo page of your passport — and, if a form asks, a second page such as the visa or address page — drag the corners to straighten it, and get a clean copy at real size as a PDF, JPG or print.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compare two PDF files?
Drop both PDFs. The differences appear right away: added text in green, removed text in red.
Does it compare images and formatting?
No — it compares the text. Changes to layout, fonts or images aren’t detected.
Can it compare scanned PDFs?
Only if they have a text layer. For scans, extract the text with OCR first (PDF to Word or Image to Text).
Are my PDF files uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser; the files never leave your device.
Can I install Compare PDF as a web app and use it offline?
Yes. Compare PDF is an installable web app (PWA) — installed from your browser, not downloaded from an app store. Click Install app at the top of this page in Chrome or Edge (Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS) or on Android, use Share → Add to Home Screen on iPhone and iPad, or File → Add to Dock in Safari 17+ on a Mac. It then opens in its own window with its own icon, and because it runs entirely in your browser it keeps working offline. Firefox on desktop can’t install web apps. How installing works.
