How mailto links are encoded
A mailto link is mailto:address?subject=…&body=…. Everything after the ? must be percent-encoded: spaces become %20 (not +, which some mail apps show literally), line breaks %0D%0A, and characters like &, ? and # are escaped so they don’t break the link. Several recipients are separated with commas.
Limits to know
- Keep links under about 2,000 characters — some browsers and mail apps cut off longer ones.
- The link only works if the visitor has a mail app set up; offer the plain address too, or use a contact form.
- Addresses in the page are visible to spam bots. Spam protection is easier with a form than with a mailto link.
