How to use the JPG to WebP Converter
- Drop one or more JPG files on the box, or click it to choose them.
- Adjust the quality slider (85 % is a good default).
- Optionally set a maximum width to resize while converting.
- Download each image, or all of them as a ZIP.
Why convert JPG to WebP?
WebP was designed for the web: at the same visual quality, lossy WebP files are usually 25–35 % smaller than JPGs. Converting your JPG photos to WebP speeds up pages, saves bandwidth for mobile visitors and is exactly what PageSpeed Insights suggests under “Serve images in next-gen formats”.
JPG vs WebP
| JPG | WebP | |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) | WebP (Google, based on VP8) |
| Compression | lossy | lossy and lossless |
| Transparency | No | Yes |
| Animation | no | yes |
| Typical size | small for photos | about 25–35 % smaller than JPG at similar quality |
| Best for | photographs and images with smooth gradients | web images of every kind — photos, graphics and transparent images |
| Weak at | text, line art and flat colors, which get blurry edges and artifacts; it also has no transparency | older desktop software and some email clients, which cannot open it |
| Support | every browser, OS, camera and app | all current browsers; Windows 10+, macOS 11+, recent Photoshop |
Will the background become transparent?
No. JPG images have no transparency, so the converted WebP has the same solid background. Converting only changes the file format — remove the background in an image editor afterwards if you need transparency.
Choosing the quality
WebP is lossy, and the quality slider controls the trade-off. 80–90 % is visually indistinguishable from the original for most photos; 60–75 % is fine for thumbnails and backgrounds; above 92 % file size grows quickly for little visible gain. The table shows the before and after size for every file, so you can adjust and compare instantly.
Private, batch conversion
Conversion uses your browser’s own image decoder and the HTML canvas, so files are never uploaded — useful for personal photos, client work and screenshots with sensitive data. Drop as many files as you like, then download them one by one or all together as a ZIP. You can also set a maximum width to resize large images while converting. Need smaller files without changing the format? Use the image compressor; to change dimensions only, use the image resizer.
