How to use the Touch Screen Test

  1. Touch the area with one finger, then several. Each finger gets its own colored circle and number.
  2. Drag across the whole area until the grid is filled. Any cell that stays empty may be a dead zone.
  3. Try a swipe, a long press and a pinch, and check the last gesture shown.
  4. Use Full screen to reach the edges. No touch screen? Use the Simulate buttons.

How to find dead zones

Use Full screen, then slide a finger slowly across the screen in rows. A line that breaks, or a cell that won’t fill, points to a dead zone. Repeat in the same spot, because a screen protector or a wet finger can cause gaps.

What is a ghost touch?

A ghost touch is a touch you didn’t make. If circles appear with your hands off the screen, remove the case and charger, clean the screen and restart the device. If it continues, the digitizer may be faulty.

How many touches should a screen support?

Most phones and tablets handle at least 5 touches, and many handle 10. Device reports shows what your browser says the screen supports, and Most at once shows what really registered. Some browsers and system gestures can reduce the number, so try again with four-finger system gestures turned off.

What does the simulator do?

The Simulate buttons play a fake gesture on the test area. They’re useful for seeing how this page reads tap, swipe, pinch and rotate on a computer without a touch screen. They don’t test your hardware. Laptop users can check gestures with the Trackpad Test.

Tools that pair well with the Touch Screen Test

  • Mouse Test — Click, scroll and move to check your mouse buttons (left, right, middle, back, forward), the scroll wheel and double-click — and catch a worn switch that double-clicks on its own.
  • Keyboard Tester — Press every key and watch it light up on the on-screen keyboard — find dead, stuck or repeating keys, see the key and code for each press, and check how many keys register at once.
  • Dead Pixel Test — Fill your screen with solid colors, gradients and test patterns to spot dead or stuck pixels, backlight bleed and banding — on a new monitor, laptop, TV or phone.
  • Refresh Rate Test — See your display’s refresh rate as your browser actually renders it — 60, 120, 144, 240 Hz or more — with live FPS, a frame-time chart and a moving block to spot stutter.

Frequently asked questions

Is anything recorded?
No. Touches are drawn in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
Why does the tool show fewer touches than I used?
Your device may limit touch points, and some systems use three or four fingers for their own gestures.
Does this work on a computer?
Yes. Touch screens work directly. With a mouse, use the Simulate buttons, or hold Shift and click to pin fingers.
Can a screen protector cause touch problems?
Yes. A thick, damaged or badly fitted protector can reduce sensitivity. Test again without it to compare.
Can I install Touch Screen Test as a web app and use it offline?
Yes. Touch Screen Test is an installable web app (PWA) — installed from your browser, not downloaded from an app store. Click Install app at the top of this page in Chrome or Edge (Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS) or on Android, use Share → Add to Home Screen on iPhone and iPad, or File → Add to Dock in Safari 17+ on a Mac. It then opens in its own window with its own icon, and because it runs entirely in your browser it keeps working offline. Firefox on desktop can’t install web apps. How installing works.
