How to use the Calorie Calculator

  1. Choose metric or imperial and enter your sex, age, height and weight.
  2. Pick the activity level that matches a typical week.
  3. Read your BMR and TDEE, and the daily calories for each goal.

BMR and TDEE

BMR (basal metabolic rate) is what your body burns at complete rest. This calculator uses the Mifflin–St Jeor equation, the most accurate of the common formulas for most people: 10 × kg + 6.25 × cm − 5 × age + 5 for men and … − 161 for women. TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) multiplies BMR by your activity level — it’s roughly what you can eat to keep your weight steady.

Calories for weight goals

A deficit of about 500 calories a day works out to roughly 0.5 kg (1 lb) a week, though real-world loss varies and slows over time. Most guidelines advise not going below about 1,200 calories a day for women or 1,500 for men without medical supervision; the table flags targets below that.

Frequently asked questions

How many calories should I eat to lose weight?
Start from your TDEE and subtract about 500 calories a day to lose around 0.5 kg (1 lb) a week. The calculator shows this and a faster option, and warns when a target gets too low.
What is the difference between BMR and TDEE?
BMR is the energy you use at rest; TDEE adds everything you do in a day, from walking to workouts. TDEE is the number to plan meals around.
How accurate is it?
Formulas like Mifflin–St Jeor are usually within about 10% for most people. Track your weight for a few weeks and adjust.
Can I install Calorie Calculator as a web app and use it offline?
Yes. Calorie Calculator is an installable web app (PWA) — installed from your browser, not downloaded from an app store. Click Install app at the top of this page in Chrome or Edge (Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS) or on Android, use Share → Add to Home Screen on iPhone and iPad, or File → Add to Dock in Safari 17+ on a Mac. It then opens in its own window with its own icon, and because it runs entirely in your browser it keeps working offline. Firefox on desktop can’t install web apps. How installing works.
