How to use the Tip Calculator
- Type the bill amount.
- Tap a tip button or type your own percentage.
- Set the number of people splitting the bill.
- Optionally enter the tax to tip on the pre-tax amount, and turn on round up for even shares.
How much should you tip?
Customs differ a lot around the world. In the US, 15–20% is standard at sit-down restaurants, with 18–20% common today; in Canada 15–18%. In much of Europe service is included and people round up or leave 5–10% for good service. In Japan and South Korea tipping is not expected and can even be refused. Check the bill for a “service charge” line first — if it’s there, the tip is usually already included.
Tip before or after tax?
Etiquette guides say to tip on the amount before tax, though many people tip on the total for simplicity. Enter the tax shown on your receipt and the calculator tips on the pre-tax amount.
Need other percentages? The Percentage Calculator handles any “X% of Y” question, and the Discount Calculator works out sale prices.
