How to use the Standard Deviation Calculator
- Paste or type your numbers.
- Read the sample standard deviation (for data that’s a sample of a larger group) or the population one (when you have every value).
- See the mean, median, mode, range, quartiles and the steps.
What standard deviation tells you
Standard deviation measures how spread out numbers are around their average. A small value means most numbers are close to the mean; a large one means they’re widely spread. In a roughly normal distribution about 68% of values fall within one standard deviation of the mean, and 95% within two.
Sample vs population
If your numbers are every member of the group (all 30 students in a class), use the population standard deviation σ, which divides by n. If they’re a sample of a bigger group (30 customers out of thousands), use the sample standard deviation s, which divides by n − 1 to correct for the sample’s bias.
s = √( Σ(x − x̄)² ÷ (n − 1) )
Quartiles use the same method as Excel’s QUARTILE.INC. Need a quick average of grades? Try the GPA Calculator; for other maths, the Scientific Calculator.
