How to use the GPA Calculator
- Enter each course, its credits (or hours) and your grade.
- Mark honors or AP / IB courses for a weighted GPA.
- Optionally add your current GPA and completed credits to see the new cumulative GPA.
How GPA is calculated
Each letter grade has grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0 …). Multiply each course’s points by its credits, add them up and divide by the total credits. A 4-credit A (16 points) and a 3-credit B (9 points) give 25 ÷ 7 = 3.57.
Weighted vs unweighted
Many US high schools give extra points for harder classes: commonly +0.5 for honors and +1.0 for AP or IB, so an A in AP counts as 5.0. Colleges usually recalculate your GPA their own way, so both numbers are shown.
Cumulative GPA
To combine semesters, weight each GPA by its credits: (old GPA × old credits + semester points) ÷ all credits. Enter your current GPA and credits above to see where this semester leaves you.
