How to use the Compound Interest Calculator

  1. Enter your starting balance and how much you’ll add each month.
  2. Set the expected yearly interest rate or return and the number of years.
  3. Choose how often interest compounds — monthly is common for savings accounts.
  4. Read the future balance and the year-by-year table, or download it as CSV.

The compound interest formula

With compound interest you earn interest on your interest. For a single deposit the future value is A = P × (1 + r/k)k·t, where P is the starting amount, r the yearly rate, k the number of compounding periods per year and t the years. $10,000 at 7% compounded monthly grows to about $40,000 in 20 years.

Regular contributions are added month by month in this calculator, with each month’s interest worked out from the compounding you choose, so mixed setups (monthly deposits, daily or yearly compounding) come out right.

The rule of 72

A quick way to estimate growth: divide 72 by the yearly rate to get the years it takes money to double. At 6% it doubles in about 12 years; at 9% in about 8.

Keep in mind

  • Investment returns vary from year to year; a fixed rate is an average, not a promise.
  • Inflation lowers what the future balance can buy — subtract an inflation estimate from the rate to see the result in today’s money.
  • Taxes and fees reduce growth and aren’t included.

Frequently asked questions

How is compound interest calculated?
A = P × (1 + r/k)^(k·t) for a single deposit. With monthly contributions the calculator adds each deposit and applies the interest month by month.
What is the difference between simple and compound interest?
Simple interest is paid only on the original amount. Compound interest is also paid on interest already earned, so the balance grows faster over time.
Does compounding frequency matter much?
A little: daily compounding earns slightly more than monthly or yearly at the same stated rate. The rate and time matter far more.
Are contributions made at the start or end of each month?
At the end of each month, which is the usual convention for savings plans.
Can I install Compound Interest Calculator as a web app and use it offline?
Yes. Compound Interest Calculator is an installable web app (PWA) — installed from your browser, not downloaded from an app store. Click Install app at the top of this page in Chrome or Edge (Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS) or on Android, use Share → Add to Home Screen on iPhone and iPad, or File → Add to Dock in Safari 17+ on a Mac. It then opens in its own window with its own icon, and because it runs entirely in your browser it keeps working offline. Firefox on desktop can’t install web apps. How installing works.
