How to use the Break-even Calculator

  1. Enter fixed costs such as rent and salaries.
  2. Enter the price and the variable cost of one unit.
  3. Read the break-even units and revenue, and the units for your target profit.

The break-even formula

Each sale contributes price − variable cost toward fixed costs: the contribution margin. Break-even units = fixed costs ÷ contribution margin. With $5,000 fixed costs and a $20 margin per unit, you break even at 250 units, or $12,500 in revenue.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a fixed cost?
Costs that do not change with sales volume in the short term: rent, salaries, software subscriptions, insurance.
What if the price is below the variable cost?
Then every sale loses money and there is no break-even point — raise the price or lower the unit cost.
Is anything I enter saved or sent?
No. The calculation runs in your browser. Your last inputs are remembered on this device only, so the page opens where you left off.
Can I install Break-even Calculator as a web app and use it offline?
Yes. Break-even Calculator is an installable web app (PWA) — installed from your browser, not downloaded from an app store. Click Install app at the top of this page in Chrome or Edge (Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS) or on Android, use Share → Add to Home Screen on iPhone and iPad, or File → Add to Dock in Safari 17+ on a Mac. It then opens in its own window with its own icon, and because it runs entirely in your browser it keeps working offline. Firefox on desktop can’t install web apps. How installing works.
